Coetio is used primarily by high-school students. These guidelines govern content posted and conduct on the platform. They apply to every account: members, officers, owners, and advisors. They are part of Coetio's Terms of Service, and a violation can result in removal of an account or a club.
One rule covers most of it. Content and conduct should be written as if a principal, the club, and the person being discussed will all read it, because any of them might.
The rules
- Be real. Accounts must use a real name and represent the account holder only. Impersonating another student, a teacher, a school, or Coetio itself is not permitted, nor is creating a club that does not exist or claiming a school affiliation that does not exist.
- Be decent. Harassment, bullying, threats, or hate directed at any person, including on the basis of race, religion, disability, gender, or sexuality, is not permitted. Disagreement is allowed; targeting a person is not.
- Keep it school appropriate. Content that is sexually explicit, graphically violent, or that promotes drugs, alcohol, weapons, or self-harm is not permitted. Content that would be removed from a school bulletin board does not belong here.
- Respect privacy.A person's phone number, address, schedule, grades, or other private information may not be posted. A roster or an export may not be forwarded to anyone outside the club. Information about people uninvolved with the club may not be collected.
- Consent before a photo. Posting a photo of a person requires that person's consent, and a guardian's consent where the school requires it. A photo must be removed when the person subject to it asks.
- Post only what belongs to the poster. Only content the poster has the right to share may be uploaded. Copyrighted material may not be posted without permission.
- Keep records honest.Attendance, service hours, votes, and dues records must be accurate. These records can appear on scholarship and college applications, and a falsified record affects every member of the club.
- No spam or scams. Club tools are for club business. Announcements, invites, and the suggestion box may not be used to advertise, sell, phish, or direct people to unsafe links.
- Do not attack the service. Breaking in, scraping, overloading, or accessing other people's data without authorization is not permitted. A security vulnerability should be reported to support@coetio.com rather than exploited.
- Follow the law and the school's rules. Applicable law and a school's own rules about clubs and student information continue to apply on Coetio.
Extra rules for club leaders
Owners and officers hold other students' information and are held to a higher standard. An advisor holds a read-only version of the same leader view, including reports that name members and their attendance counts, so these rules apply to advisors as well.
- Only information the club needs should be collected, and what is collected should be disclosed.
- Contact details must stay inside the club. Selling, publishing, or reusing them elsewhere is not permitted.
- Exports and backup files must be safeguarded. Once downloaded, they are no longer covered by Coetio's access controls.
- Members must be removed promptly when they leave the club or ask to be removed.
- The private note field is for club business, not for opinions about a person that would not be said to their face.
- Club tools may not be used for personal purposes, such as messaging one member about something unrelated to the club.
The anonymous suggestion box
Suggestions are anonymous to the club. No name, email, or account link is stored on the suggestion itself, so no club leader can determine who sent one. The one exception is an anti-spam counter, which records for about two days that an account used the box, never the content submitted, and is visible only to site administration. This design supports honest feedback and also makes the feature easy to abuse. The suggestion box exists to help a club, not to target a person. A club that receives abusive suggestions can turn the feature off in Settings.
Reporting a problem
- Any club: the report link on the club's join page can be used without an account.
- Something inside a club: a club leader or an advisor should be told first, since most issues can be resolved immediately at that level.
- Anything else, including a report about a leader: email support@coetio.com with what happened, where, and a link if one is available.
If someone is in danger, a school or local emergency services should be contacted first. Coetio is a website, not an emergency service, and is not monitored around the clock.
What happens when a rule is broken
Coetio reviews what is reported. Coetio does not monitor all content and does not undertake to detect every violation independently. Depending on the severity, Coetio may:
- remove the content;
- suspend a club during review;
- suspend or delete an account;
- delete a club.
Enforcement typically begins with a warning. Conduct that puts a student at risk is acted on immediately. While a club is suspended, its join page shows a notice to its own members and returns not-found to everyone else, no new member can join, leaders cannot post, and downloads are paused. Members can still sign in and read content that already exists.
Appeals
A club owner may appeal a suspension from the suspension page, and receives a decision with a reason. For any other enforcement action, including an account action, email support@coetio.com for reconsideration.
